A Baffler Many Pundits QUESTION WHY Kerry Is NOT
Doing Better Against A VERY UNpopular CEO
A NV Guest Commentary
"Regardless of the press saying Kerry isn't capitalizing on Bush's
slide, I think Kerry IS actually. I can remember when it was
unimaginable that Bush would ever hit numbers this low, with
all the perceptions and programming Bush had going for him.
For Kerry to break through that kind of consciousness barrier --
that "we've GOT to go with the guy who got us through 911"
mentality -- AND move OUT FRONT by exploiting GWB's
weaknesses ... is simply not doable at this point in the game.
It seems to me folks are giving up the ghost of the
confidence they HAD placed in Bush, and yet it is VERY
DIFFICULT for them.
Still, they ARE letting it go, but not wanting to truly admit it
to themselves. YET.
IF the spotlight even shines on them a little -- showing that they
ARE leaving Bush -- they scamper right back to him. The
polls repeatedly show that.
Nonetheless, I think the polls reflect that many FINALLY
have their "toe in the reality water" ... and they are moving to
Kerry's side, slowly but steadily.
Overall, the poll results seem perfectly reasonable to me. The issue at
this point is NOT the Kerry momentum we keep hearing about.
It 's the continued and steady EROSION of the Bush persona as
being untouchable ... And that is happening. He ain't!
Patience is a virtue. To kill a clever snake, it takes a
MONUMENTAL AMOUNT of patience. I think Kerry is in the
best position that his supporters could have ever hoped for ... at
this point in a VERY complex electoral psychology"
